The Pigalle Club, 215 Piccadilly, W1

His name is synonymous with Funk Music, his pedigree impeccable; his band: the tightest little funk orchestra on earth.

Maceo Parker is known by aficionados as a James Brown sideman; appreciated mainly by those in the know. More than a decade and a half later Maceo Parker has been enjoying a blistering solo career. He navigates deftly between ‘60′s soul and ‘70′s freaky funk while exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop.

Maceo’s three releases “Funk Overload,”(’98) “Dial M-A-C-E-O,”(2000) and “Made by Maceo,”(2003) entered the top 40 in the European charts upon release. He put out “My First Name is Maceo,” in 2004. On his album “School’s In,” (2005) Maceo succeeds in creating as close to a live sound as is possible in a studio setting. His most recent release is critically acclaimed “Roots & Grooves” (2007) with the WDR Big Band, on the Intuition Label.

At the beginning of 2007 Maceo had a chance to fulfill one of his dreams in working with Grammy winners the WDR Big Band, broadcasting and performing a live series of shows paying tribute to Ray Charles and putting Maceo’s own funky music to a Big Band setting. The success of these shows is leading to talks about future projects, in the meantime Maceo with his own die-hard band continues to tour around the world.

A very good friend of mine is getting married, and I couldn’t be happier for him. The only thing worrying me is that I suggested putting together a wedding band.

To some extent (along with, you know, wanting to make my friend and his fiancée happy) alcohol, and the overestimation of one’s actual ability that is so often a side effect of alcohol, is responsible for my offering to do it. And now I’m concerned. I don’t want to disappoint them – they instantly thought it was a great idea.

After the initial flurry of activity, which involved me recruiting three other friends (on keyboards, bass and drums to complement my guitar – we’re still looking for a vocalist), the magnitude of our task suddenly become apparent.

The wedding band has long been derided and a sure-fire way of getting a cheap laugh throughout TV and film history – Jon Lovitz‘s slimy turn in The Wedding Singer and The Dan Band’s marvellously inappropriate interpretation of Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart in Old School being just two examples.

Perhaps the reason for WBs’ perennial naffness is the type of person associated with them; competent musicians in their late-30s and upwards who, after trying and failing to make it as a rock/pop musician playing their own music, have decided that playing other people’s songs is better than nothing at all.

With our band’s average age a (cough) youthful 30 then – combined with the fact that we’re all in bands who’ve had varying degrees of success (two of the group are even proud owners of MTV awards) – we should be OK, right?

And if that sounds like protesting too much, you may be right. It occurred to me that there’s a huge danger that playing anything other than jazz standards or traditional songs will result in an audio-visual cheeseball stinker. Rock/pop/R&B (which we will play at the groom’s request) is, at its best, subversive and (hopefully) libidinous – so is it even possible to make that work in front of an audience that ranges from toddlers to the elderly? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Next week we’ve got our first “band meeting” supposedly to discuss what we will play. I’ve so far come up with a list of 10 suggestions, chosen purely on the basis that they have to have the power to induce dancing in even the most reluctant of guests:

1. Love to Love You Baby, Donna Summer
2. Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), Sly and the Family Stone
3. Here Comes Your Man, Pixies
4. If I Was Your Girlfriend, Prince
5. Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen
6. Let’s Spend the Night Together, the Rolling Stones
7. Under Pressure, Queen and David Bowie
8. Heat Wave, Martha and the Vandellas
9. Gloria, Them
10. Rock the Casbah, the Clash

So there’s my wish list. But I’m, um, not married to it, so if you can do better, then please, all suggestions are very welcome. I certainly don’t want the pinkish hue of the blushing bride to be connected in any way with embarrassment.

A call to all Music Artists / Buskers: Busking Sessions in Leatherhead Surrey Fridays 18th, 25th July & 1st, 8th August 08.

Calling all Music Artists/buskers: we are holding Busking Sessions in Leatherhead Town Centre, Surrey on Fridays for the next few weeks (at least). The idea is to give a platform for Musicians/Artists in all genres to showcase their works and at the same time sell them directly to the general public. On these days there will be Live performances by individual singers/bands together with Open–Mike sessions and any other related creative work which can add to the events - Street foods, jugglers, magicians and more…

As a creative person I would like to invite you to participate in one or more of these Friday sessions in Leatherhead, to our mutual benefit in many ways.
The dates confirmed so far are on the following Fridays: July 18th, July 25th, August 1st and August 8th.
Let’s have a chat about this as soon as possible. I am on 07883356359

Regards & GOD BLESS! & Please pass or forward these on…

Omer.

With a rich musical culture, Brazil has influenced the music worldwide with BOSSA NOVA, which was created in Rio de Janeiro in 1958. This year, Bossa Nova is commemorating 50 years of history. To virtually all the people, the words “Bossa Nova” are synonymous with Brazilian jazz. More specifically, they immediately trigger memories of bossa nova’s greatest hit, “The Girl from Ipanema” but have no idea that Bossa Nova has a thousand of hits rearranged and rewritten in several languages.
The original Bossa Nova is heard in Brazil in bars with live music such as “Vinícius Piano Bar” on the beachside neighborhood (Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro) that was home to part of the Bossa Nova nucleus. The same place where Vinícius de Morais and Antonio Carlos Jobim created the song “The Girl from Ipanema”.
The singer and composer Eri Galvão plays at Vinícius Piano Bar twice a week introducing Bossa Nova to an International audience. With his experience, Eri prepared a workshop about Bossa Nova in which he sings and plays the greatest hits of the movement in addition to telling the story and explaining the technique of the beat of Bossa Nova on his guitar.
The program and details of this Bossa Nova Workshop and Concert is in the file attached to this message. Our company is offering this project to be running at Jazz Clubs, Schools of Music and theaters in your city.
If you are interested in holding this moment of good music and celebration of Bossa Nova, please contact us…

Nicola Emmanuelle | MUSIC (GIG & SHOW LISTINGS)
The talents of Nicola Emmanuelle have been obvious for some time to the many artists, producers and musical directors who have been using her crystalline voice for studio albums, film and television work.

Nicola’s songs evoke the work and sound of the original jazz pioneers of the thirties, forties and fifties, along with stunning and beautiful renditions of some of the all time great jazz standards.

Coming from a South African jazz dynasty, (her Father Nathan ‘Dambuza’ Mdledle was the founder and lead singer of the Manhattan Brothers) London born Nicola attended the Cleo Laine school of music followed by the Bourne school of music and Goldsmiths foundation, and enjoyed a Classical training by Elizabeth Anderson Kramer.

Her understanding of the feel and swing of the best of the past, and her own contemporary iconic style and individuality adds to and supports a voice of mesmerizing
purity and beauty. She can touch an audience with a torch song, before drawing them back to laughter with her endearing and graceful humour. Many acts have recently tried to encompass the enduring appeal of the great jazz singers and writers – few if any, have the capacity or talent to do it with such authenticity or affection as Nicola Emmanuelle.
James Taylor Quartet | MUSIC (GIG & SHOW LISTINGS)
James Taylor, Hammond guru, stands with one foot planted firmly in the new millennium – and other, just as firmly, somewhere south of 1970. Releasing his 19th album in June 2002, The Exorcism, James has consistently remained at the forefront of the jazz funk scene since his debut fifteen years ago. JTQ’s first album in 1987, Mission Impossible, laid the foundation for what would become their signature sound: funked-up, sleazed-down, keyboard-driven jazz that could be Webster’s entry for “groovy.”

Despite JTQ’s obvious studio talents – James has collaborated with the likes of U2, Tina Turner, Manic Street Preachers, The Pogues as well as with Tom Jones on the multi-platinum album Reload – JTQ are best-known and loved for their memorable live performances. With James’ Hammond leading the way, JTQ jam out with driving horns, sly rhythms and kitschy-cool melodies. Renowned for their film and TV themes, live favourites include JTQ’s debut single “Blow Up,” the mesmerizing “2001,” and of course, the inimitable, infamous “Starsky & Hutch.”
Natacha Atlas | MUSIC (GIG & SHOW LISTINGS)
Eastern music icon and singing sensation NATACHA ATLAS. Her début Acoustic project (and first album for the World Village label), finds Natacha exploring a more traditional roots world, again infusing Oriental and Western music but looking to the past to uncover a rich history of musical collaboration.

Natacha’s exquisite vocals are supported by a musical ensemble qualified for the task. Such instruments as the ney, cello, fender, riq, baroque guitar, accordion, darbucka, clarinet and a host of strings create a musical soundwash of landscapes that are sympathetic to each individual performance’s aims and requirements.

David Arnold says: “The amalgam of the exotic, the coquettish, the private and personal, the rhythmic and tribal, the spoken and unspoken, the space, the voice, the sound. These are the building blocks upon which a Natacha Atlas record is made. Upon listening, one feels that a most beautiful secret has been whispered in a aquiet confessional.”
